Coal India Ltd (CIL), which witnessed a 6-per cent drop in production at around 241 million tonnes (mt) during April-September, is hopeful of regaining its production tempo in the remaining part of the year. Torrential rainfall across locations affected the company’s coal production and off-take, particularly in September, said a press statement issued by the company. (BL). |
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) plans to invest as much as Rs.48,933 crore to scale up its port at Dhamra in Odisha to handle 314 million tonnes (mt) of cargo. (ET).

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals on Wednesday said it has received tentative nod from the US health regulator for dimethyl fumarate delayed-release capsules used for treating multiple sclerosis. The tentative nod granted by the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) to Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Inc, USA is for multiple strengths of dimethyl fumarate delayed-release capsules of 120 mg and 240 mg. The lenders of Jet Airways have approved the settlement with Luckystar Property Holding, the owner of the Siroya Centre, a building that once was headquarters for the grounded carrier. Luckystar and the committee of creditors (CoC) were in talks since August, when the custodian of airways’ assets informed the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) that the airline was willing to vacate its headquarters and another office in Mumbai to resolve its disputes with Luckystar Property Holdings and mortgage lender HDFC Ltd. Indian refiner Reliance Industries Ltd is scheduled to resume loading Venezuelan crude in October after a four-month pause, according to sources and internal documents from PDVSA seen by Reuters, a move that could help Venezuela's state-run company drain its large oil inventories. The United States in January imposed the toughest sanctions yet on Venezuela's oil industry, depriving the OPEC-member nation of the main destination for its crude exports. (ET). |

Equity mutual funds witnessed a net inflow of around Rs6,489cr in September, the lowest in the last four months. According to the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), net inflow into equity and equity-linked schemes fell 28% over the previous month to Rs6,609cr in September, while there was an outflow of Rs120cr from close-ended equity plans, translating into a net equity inflow of Rs6,489cr in September. Besides, gold exchange-traded funds witnessed an infusion of Rs44cr against an inflow of Rs145cr in August. The outflow has pulled down the asset base of the MF industry, comprising 44 players, by 4% to Rs24.51 lakh cr in September-end from Rs25.47 lakh cr at End-August. (BL). |
India has moved down 10 places to rank 68th on the annual global competitiveness index, largely due to improvements witnessed by several other economies. Singapore, meanwhile, has replaced the US as the world’s most competitive economy. India, which was ranked 58th in the annual Global Competitiveness Index, compiled by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF), is among the worst-performing BRICS nations along with Brazil (ranked even lower than India at 71 this year). After onion, retail price of tomatoes shot up to Rs.80 per kilogram in the national capital on Wednesday due to supply disruption caused by heavy rains in key growing states, including Karnataka. However, the price of onions has come down marginally compared to past week and is now hovering around Rs.60 per kg in the national capital. (BL). |
Tea exports from India remained virtually stagnant in the first eight months of 2019 from January to August, according to Tea Board data. During the period from January to August 2019, tea exports stood at 162.18 million kilograms, as compared to 162.15 million kg in the same period last year, it said. Offtake by CIS countries, which figure among the top importers traditionally, are lower in the current eight months at 36.63 million kg as against 41.35 million kg registered during January to August 2018. The other major importing nation Iran showed a steep jump at 40.96 million kg during January to August 2019 as compared to 17.98 million kg in the previous eight months. (ET). |

US markets closed higher Wednesday as investors hoped for an easing of trade tensions between the U.S. and China, with high-level trade talks set to begin Thursday. The Dow Jones Index closed at 26,346,
up 181.97 points by 0.70%. The Standard & Poors 500 index closed at 2,919, up 26.34 points by 0.91%. The Nasdaq Composite Index closed at 7,904, up 79.96 points by 1.02%.
FTSE 100
UK markets edged higher on Wednesday on the back of an improved news-flow ahead of this week's Sino-US trade talks, but analysts remained cautious. The FTSE 100 index closed at 7,166, up 23.35 points by 0.33%. |

Global stocks tumbled and the safe haven yen and Swiss franc gained in early Asian trade on Thursday, on signs Washington and Beijing were still wide apart on trade issues and were making no progress in deputy-level talks. Nikkei is currently trading at 21,512, up 56.33 points by 0.26%.
Precious Metals
Gold futures ended higher on Wednesday to post their first gain in four sessions, as traders kept an eye on U.S.-China tariff negotiations, developments around Brexit and economic data.
Base Metals
The three-month copper price on the London Metal Exchange was lower at the close of trading on Wednesday October 9, remaining below the $5,700 per tonne resistance level amid thin volumes, while forward spreads in nickel tightened over the afternoon.
Crude Oil
Oil prices slid on Thursday as hopes faded for any significant progress in U.S.-China trade talks that could dispel clouds over the global economy and gloom over prospects for weaker oil demand. |
